Is your Elevator Pitch Snappy? Ready to Go? Does it matter?

How’s your Elevator Pitch? Fresh? Tired? Needs some love?

Do you even HAVE an elevator pitch?

It doesn’t matter if you’re in business for yourself, or for others – you need to have a simple statement or phrase that you can share with people you meet who are interested in you and your work.

The elevator pitch is the most basic public speaking tool as you operate in business. When I coach my public speaking clients, we often start with the elevator pitch, as that is a way for them to get clearer on defining the work they do and why it matters.

I have part of my ‘elevator pitch’ on my new website home page.

“Hi, I’m Jen. I help women in business become compelling and confident speakers so they can connect with and grow their community.”

It’s clear, it’s simple, and it invites my audience to ask further questions. It took me several different iterations to get there and I’m going to share how you can get yours going too!

“Hi, I’m Jen. I help women in business become compelling and confident speakers so they can connect with and grow their community.”

Start by writing at least 5 different sentences about who you are and what you do. This is not the final product – you want to create a variety or phrases here so you can choose which one will eventually ‘fit’ the best.

Now speak each of these phrases out loud to yourself. You’ll need to do this several times and I suggest you stand up to do this. As you speak each one, you’ll begin to tune into which words and phrases are awkward and which ones flow. Circle the words and phrases that flow.

Using what you’ve circled, come back to your paper and re-write at least 3 new versions.

Same process as above – now read them out lout and circle what flows. Now is the time to test them – both with your ideal client and/or with your online network.

Start with any online networks you’re in and test each phrase – you can do a poll in a Facebook group, or you can ask your mailing list. Test with trusted friends.

Once you narrow it down, begin to practice speaking it out loud. Memorize it. You may find you need to adjust a word here or there, but now you have your brand new sparkly elevator pitch!

If you want to really refine your elevator pitch, I’m offering 2-hour elevator pitch-perfect workshops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in February and in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide in March, 2019. If you’re interested in any of the workshops, simply contact me for more details!
