How do I sound?

Jen Lang, Voice and Communications Coach

Do you ever listen to your voice on playback? Not easy, is it? Kind of awkward feeling. As if it’s not really YOU.

But it is you.

And it’s some of the most valuable information you could possible have, especially if you are doing any form of public speaking, whether it’s Periscope, webinars, on stage, or around a table.

It’s how you sound to others.

We hardly think about our voices when we speak every day – but it’s the immediacy of a playback that may cause us to cringe when we hear how others hear us.

If you are already blessed with a naturally pleasing voice, speak your words clearly, and find it easy to ‘be yourself’ when speaking live, then you’ve already got a great start.

But, if you find yourself questioning your recorded voice, or someone you trust has listened to you and perhaps gently suggested some voice training, then maybe, just maybe, you should listen to that ‘inside voice’.

We hardly think about our voices when we speak every day – but it’s the immediacy of a playback that may cause us to cringe when we hear how others hear us.

It hits us right in the gut. That inner critic saying, “Too many ‘uhhhhs’”, or, “What was that word I said?” or finally, “Do I really sound that [insert negative word here]?”….

Despite what you may think, it IS possible to change your voice. The core of your sound will remain, but you can always improve all the little pieces that will make your voice MORE you. So your voice, instead of being a distraction, can be one of the strongest aspects of your message and your business.
